Conservative MP slammed for untimely joke about Trudeau residence break-in

Have you ever said something stupid, knowing it was stupid the moment it came out of your mouth?

That's probably how Conservative MP Ryan Leef felt on Monday morning.

As was widely reported over the weekend, Liberal leader Justin Trudeau's Ottawa residence was burglarized, on Saturday morning, as his wife Sophie and young children slept.

On Twitter, someone asked this question: "How long before the CPC attack ads asking if Trudeau can't keep his own home safe - how can he keep Canada safe? (You know they are coming)"

Leef responded with this untimely retort.

The Yukon MP — who was also a former RCMP officer — deleted the tweet and quickly apologized.

But, as is so often the case these days, the Twitterverse was unforgiving.

In an interview with the Canadian Press, Trudeau — who was in Winnipeg at the time of the break-in — admitted that the burglary has really shaken him and his family.

"When my wife and kids, with the nanny, are at home on their own and someone breaks in and engages in some fairly disturbing behaviour, I think it’s certainly something that gives me pause in my ability to do the travelling and the job that I’m doing that takes me away from them so much," Trudeau said.

"For all the sacrifices that we put through in our line of work, the one thing that we don’t feel that we should have to sacrifice is personal security."

Meanwhile, sources have told the Toronto Star, that the intruder didn't appear to take anything but left a note "on top of an arrangement of large [butcher] knives." It had been reported that the note warned the Trudeau's to lock their doors.

Both the RCMP and Ottawa police are continuing their investigations into the incident.
