New Democrat MP Olivia Chow’s mother in bad mood because of privatized garbage pick-up

Say what you want about NDP MP Olivia Chow, but one things for sure: she's a good daughter.

In late October, Toronto city council voted 26-12 last October to privatize collection in some districts as a cost-saving measure — when fully implemented the outsourcing is expected to save the city $11 million a year.

And, on Tuesday, Green For Life (GFL) Environmental officially took over garbage pickup for 165,000 homes between Yonge Street and the Humber River (District 2).

But hold on a second: Olivia Chow's mother isn't very happy about it.

According to a Tweet by the MP for Trinity-Spadina, the privitization has affected her mom's mood.

"My mother is in an extra bad mood today," Chow, tweeted early Tuesday morning.

"The garbage hasn't been picked up yet - the wonder of privatization."

In an interview with CP24, Pat Dovigi, CEO of the private service provider Green for Life, said his company's routes are different from the city's, so people may notice their garbage is picked up at a different time than in the past.

Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong, chair of the public works and infrastructure committee, brushed aside Chow's complaint, saying it is in line with Chow's support of organized labour.

Her complaint, however, did garner several responses from the public.

On Twitter Miss Donna wrote: "@oliviachow: WOW does your mom live in a ritzy area? In East York we have public pick up and it comes on a scheduled DAY not a scheduled HOUR"

Lori Franz wrote: "@oliviachow If that is her biggest worry today then she is a lucky woman & should be thankful."

$11 million in savings versus Olivia's mother's mood?

Sorry Olivia, your mother might be in a bad mood for a long time.
