Did the Liberals make the right choice in electing Justin Trudeau as their new leader?

As expected, on Sunday, the Liberals gave Justin Trudeau the keys to their leaders' office.

In convincing fashion, Trudeau won the leadership with over 80 per cent of first ballot votes (based on a system whereby each riding is given the same weight).

But is Trudeau the right leader for the Liberals, right now?

We went to our political panel to get their thoughts on that question. Here's what they had to say:

Gerry Nicholls, political analyst, former Vice President of the National Citizens Coalition:

I think he’s definitely the right leader for the Liberals. True, he’s a relative novice, he has not yet been battle tested, his current popularity could turn out to be nothing but a “sugar high”, but all the same, Trudeau embodies something the battered Liberals desperately need right now,: hope. Having him as a leader is a gamble, but it’s a gamble the Liberals have to take.

Alex Tsakumis, political analyst, radio host:

No. He's completely unqualified to be in public life. As per usual, the Grits are banking on style, and no substance. They are a non-existent political entity west of the Lakehead and are hoping Trudeau's charm offensive will work. Trudeau has accomplished nothing of any relevance while an MP. Only in the minds of the federal Liberal silo can you do nothing for almost a decade in parliament and because you're a member of 'The Lucky Sperm Club' be considered leadership material.

David Coletto, Abacus Data pollster:

Liberal members and supporters answered that question today by electing him as their leader.

Looking at our polling numbers, it's hard to conclude that he isn't the right choice. He's well known, well liked, and many Canadians are willing to give him a chance. to succeed. Most important, I think no other candidate contrasts as well against Mr. Mulcair and Mr. Harper than Justin Trudeau.

While Mulcair and Harper are less charismatic, less energetic, and older, Trudeau is youthful, energetic, and so different. He also has this contagious energy about him that makes people want to be on his side.

Matthew Coutts, Yahoo! Canada News national affairs columnist:

The Liberals have found themselves in an abysmal place, and after years of looking for quick fixes they have to realize they aren’t going to rebound overnight. Some might see Trudeau as too young and inexperienced to run a party, but I don’t believe that is the case. Yes, he is young. But he is not naïve, and he is smart enough to know it will take time and hard work to right the listing ship. His pedigree, and the attention that comes with it, will help in the short term. And if he really does have the goods, Trudeau is in a position to bring the party back to prominence over the long term.
