With Eve Adams, Prime Minister Harper has no choice but to act swiftly

A CTV report suggests that Stephen Harper is under increasing pressure to strip Eve Adams of her Parliamentary Secretary role and to bar her from seeking the Tory nomination in Oakville.

While Jason MacDonald -- the prime minister's communications director -- says that's not in the cards, you have to wonder if that's the next step in this sordid affair that some are dubbing 'love-gate.'

Adams, the current MP for Mississauga Brampton and the Parliamentary Secretary to the health minister, is aggressively seeking the Conservative Party nomination in Oakville North-Burlington where she now lives.

Earlier this week, her fiance — Dimitri Soudas — was fired as the party's executive director for interfering in her nomination race.

And on Wednesday, there was a leaked letter from the Conservative Party's Oakville riding president to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, slamming Adams' and her behaviour.

"It is with heavy heart that I fell I must write you directly with regard to recent actions by Eve Adams MP that I believe are both negatively impacting the internal workings of our local association and are beginning to take a toll on the brand of the Party," Mark Fedak wrote in the letter dated April 1.

"I was originally going to write you about a specific matter after our last board meeting...Sadly things have only gotten worse."

Fedak went to cite several alleged wrong-doings: He claimed that Adams told a local contractor — a map-maker — not to work with the local riding association; he complained about the MP sending taxpayer funded mailouts to Oakville — a riding that she doesn't represent; and he complained about Adams' behaviour at a recent board meeting where she wouldn't leave after being asked to nine times.

Unlike in recent scandals (see: Mike Duffy/Nigel Wright), Harper has acted quickly and authoritatively. Soudas was released shortly after details of his involvement emerged.

And, we now know that Harper has ordered the party's national council to investigative Adams' conduct.

It's the right decision but one where he had little choice.

The prime minister has to be seen to be protecting the integrity of the Conservative Party's open nomination process or otherwise risk alienating grassroots members across the country.

Allowing a sitting MP do run roughshod over volunteers won't stand with the rank and file.

It's also clear that other MPs aren't pleased with Adams' actions either.

"Her actions are not becoming of a member of Parliament," Toronto MP Chungsen Leung told reporters on Wednesday according to CBC News.

"But that is my opinion."

And then there's this video which came to light, Wednesday.

Certainly, the video is a bit of a pile-on -- who hasn't lost their temper when having to deal with customer service reps.

But remember this was for a $6 refund for a woman who makes approximately $176,200 a year; her fiance reportedly made $300,000.

Add that to a couple that allegedly tried to skirt party rules and that allegedly bullied volunteers and you have an MP that hurts the Tory brand.
