How the federal Liberals will select their new leader

After a 6 month campaign with 5 debates in 5 provinces, the federal Liberals begin their week-long leadership selection process in Toronto on Saturday.

This isn't your typical leadership convention.

Here's how the Liberals will select their new leader:

National Showcase:

On Saturday, the six remaining candidates will get an opportunity to make their final pitch to the 127,000 registered voters across the country at a National Showcase at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Each candidate is allotted 25 minutes to make a presentation to the audience: their presentation could be a speech, a video or they can have someone speak on their behalf.

The speaking order — as selected by the party — is as follows:

2:00 p.m. — Deborah Coyne

2:30 p.m. — Karen McCrimmon

3:00 p.m. — Joyce Murray

3:30 p.m. — Justin Trudeau

4:00 p.m. — Martha Hall Findlay

4:30 p.m. — Martin Cauchon

The event will be broadcast online at Liberal.ca and CPAC and on television on CBC Newsworld.

Voting:

Registered voters will vote on-line or by telephone between 12:01 (EST) April 7th and 3:00 p.m. on April 14th.

They'll be using a preferential ballot system in which voters rank the 6 candidates in order of preference.

All 308 Liberal riding associations across the county are weighted equally so if one riding has 5,000 voters and another one has 500, they're given the same voice.

The Liberal Party explains the process in the video below:

Results Announcement:

The Liberals will announce their new leader at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa on April 14th at 5:00 p.m. (EST).

The 'announcement' will be a 2 hour long event concluding with the new leader giving his — or her — acceptance speech.
