Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird loses beer bet with America’s John Kerry

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry took time out from the G-8 Foreign Ministers Summit in London on Thursday to settle a bet.

The John's wagered on the women's world hockey championship game which took place in Ottawa on Tuesday.

The American women beat the Canadians 3-2 and Baird was forced to pay up -- with beer.

"Kerry chose Sam Adams (from Mass.) if Canada won, and Molson Canadian if the US won. (all via twitter: @statedept and @honjohnbaird)," Foreign Affairs spokesperson Rick Roth told Yahoo! Canada News.

"Baird one upped him and said Canadian + Beau's [Beer] - and Beau's pulled through and developed a special logo. He delivered the Molson to Kerry today in London at the G8 - and we will deliver the specialty Beau's to the US Embassy in short order."

Friendly political wagers on sporting events have become commonplace in recent years.

After 2010 Winter Olympics, President Barack Obama made good on a bet and delivered 2 cases of beer to Prime Minister Stephen Harper after Canada’s men’s hockey team beat the U.S.A. for the gold medal.

Domestically, for the Grey Cup, mayors often get into the act. Last year, Calgary's Naheed Nenshi was forced to don a Toronto Argos jersey in his council chambers after the Argos beat the Stamps in the final CFL game of the year.
