NDP Charlie Angus raps at convention, becomes butt of jokes

Where else, but at an NDP convention, would you see a 40-something-year-old MP perform a rap song. That's exactly what NDP MP Charlie Angus did on Friday.

With chuckles from media row, Angus and rapper Obi took to the stage at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre ahead of leadership candidate Paul Dewar's speech to delegates.

The half-song, half-rap was a tribute to former leader Jack Layton.

While the words may have been touching, Angus's 'dancing' and waving became the butt of many jokes on the convention floor and in the Twittersphere.

Scott Feschuck of Maclean's magazine tweeted: "I volunteer to be the Simon Cowell of this episode of NDP Idol."

Colby Cosh of Maclean's tweeted: "If you're watching Charlie Angus rap, you're seeing what happens when a party is too 'civil' to say no to any horrible well-intentioned idea."

And marionetta tweeted: "Charlie Angus' rap reminded me of my dad, at a party. So embarassing [sic]."

Lyrics of the song:

"Don't let them tell you it can't be done.
When the night is dark
There'll always be the dawn

Don't let them tell you it can't be done
This is the House that Jack built
And it's standing proud and strong

Gotta have a dream
That's longer than a lifetime
Doing it our time
We're making the change

Gotta have a dream
That's longer than a lifetime
Doing it our time
We're making the change."
