Old video of Justin Trudeau slagging Alberta politicians surfaces

If the federal Liberals were hoping for some sort of a revival in the province of Alberta — it just got a lot harder.

Just one day after Liberal MP David McGuinty was forced to apologize for his 'go back to Alberta' comments, a 2-year-old interview with leadership candidate Justin Trudeau has surfaced where he is quoted as saying the country is in bad shape because Albertans are in power.

"Canada isn't doing well right now because it's Albertans who control our community and socio-democratic agenda. It doesn't work," he said according to a translation provided by Sun Media News.

The reporter then asked Trudeau if he thought Canada would be better off if there were more Quebecers in charge.

"I'm a Liberal, so of course I think so, yes," Trudeau responded.

"Certainly when we look at the great prime ministers of the 20th century, those that really stood the test of time, they were MPs from Quebec.

"This country - Canada - it belongs to us."

Not surprisingly, the Conservatives are making hay with the video. They posted it on their website with this quote: "We knew these anti-Alberta attitudes were deeply held within the Liberal Party, we just didn't know how close to the surface they were."

On Thursday evening, according to the National Post, a spokesperson for Trudeau appeared on CBC News in an apparent damage control exercise.

"It was a very long interview in French. What he was saying was that Quebecers see a government that doesn't share their values," Gerald Butz said.

"It doesn't have to do with the fact that they are from Alberta. It is due to the fact that they are right wing and negative."

Meanwhile, Liberal insider Warren Kinsella rallied the troops on Twitter asking his followers to post embarrassing historical comments made by Reform, Alliance and Conservative MPs.

Here are just a couple of them:
