Pauline Marois up, Kathleen Wynne down in latest ‘popular premier’ poll

Which premier had the best summer?

On Monday, Angus Reid released its quarterly 'popular premier' poll. There's no surprise at the top of the list: Saskatchewan's Brad Wall remains Canada's most liked premier with an approval rating of 66 per cent.

But what's most intriguing about this poll is who gained popularity and who lost it since the last such survey in June.

Just before the summer, Quebec Premier Pauline Marois was rated as the least popular premier with only 27 per cent Quebec respondents saying that they're satisfied with her performance. She now has support of 39 per cent of Quebecers.

"Much of this may be attributable to her handling of the Lac-Mégantic rail tragedy, and the wedge issue of the Quebec Charter of values," the survey report notes.

"A recent ARG poll indicates the proposed Charter legislation enjoys widespread support with Quebec voters."

On the other side of the spectrum, the biggest drops in popularity belong to Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Kathy Dunderdale (-6 per cent), Manitoba Premier Greg Sellinger (-5 per cent) and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne (-4 per cent).

Angus Reid also asked respondents if they approve of the performance of their province's opposition leaders.

Strong performers there include Newfoundland's Dwight Ball, Manitoba's Brian Pallister and Nova Scotia's Stephen McNeil. McNeil's numbers bode well for him as he heads into an October 8th election.

The online survey of 6,559 Canadian adults was conducted between September 5 and September 13 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 per cent, 19 times out of 20. Prince Edward Island was not included in the survey.
