Rideau Hall is Canada’s showcase building for Will and Kate’s royal tour

While in Ottawa the Royal couple, Prince William and his wife Kate, will be staying at Rideau Hall - the official residence of the Governor General.

The elaborate estate located at 1 Sussex Drive in Ottawa has been the home and workplace of every Governor General since Confederation.

The residence is comprised of 88 acres of grounds - the main building with 170 rooms covering approximately 102,000 square feet plus 24 outbuildings.

About 5,000 square feet in the main building is private and the remaining space is used for state, service and administrative functions.

The lands include rose gardens, rockeries, cricket lawns, stands of trees, a swimming pool, and in the winter, an outdoor ice rink.

It is the largest of the official residences in Canada's capital region and is currently assessed at more than $25 million. In 2007-2008 it cost $1.9 million a year to maintain, including a $254,872 electric bill.

Most heads of state and royalty stay at Rideau Hall during visits to Ottawa. Most recently, William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, stayed there during the 2010 Royal Tour of Canada.

It's a home fit for a king or queen — or, in this case, a prince.
