Stephen Harper channels ‘Seinfeld’ on Twitter, tells NDP leader ‘serenity now!’

Well, what do you know: Stephen Harper might just be a Seinfeld fan.

If you're a connoisseur of the show like me, you will invariably remember the episode where George's father, Frank, uses the mantra 'serenity now' to control his anger.

On Wednesday, in the House of Commons, Harper offered those words to a 'heated' Tom Mulcair who was steamed about the CNOOC takeover of Nexen.

"In this time of Merry Christmas," the prime minister said, " I would wish serenity now to all members."

After Question Period, Harper — or one of his communications staff — tweeted this message to Mulcair:

The Tweet, as you can see came with a link to a clip from the referenced Seinfeld episode.

Before becoming leader of the NDP, Thomas Mulcair had a reputation of being a hot head. So much so, that some dubbed him 'Angry Tom.'

While Mulcair has done a marvelous job keeping his temper in check, every now and again it seems to reappear.

It did in May — during the Dutch disease controversy — with Mulcair getting into a heated exchange in the House of Commons with Conservative MP James Moore.

And it did during the final Question Period before Parliament's Christmas break.

Don't be surprised to see the Tories make some more hay out of this.

According to Sun News, some Conservative MPs were egging Mulcair on in the House on Wednesday, saying stuff like "Don't get angry Tom, have another drink."
