Oh Canada! Is William Shatner going where Stephen Harper has gone before?

It seems, for whatever reason, rewriting our national anthem has become a sport in this country.

In their March 2010 Throne Speech, the Conservatives suggested amending the phrase "in all thy sons command" in order to make it more gender-neutral to "Thou dost in us command."

The mere suggestion sparked a national debate that was only somewhat retarded when the Prime Minister's Office withdrew the idea saying Canadians overwhelmingly opposed changes.

In February of this year, Liberal MP Carolyn Bennett and her party introduced a gender-neutral, secular and bilingual anthem in Parliament.

And on Saturday, William Shatner (aka Captain Kirk) gave us yet another version of our national song.

As part of the Governor-General's Performing Arts Awards Gala, where Shatner received a lifetime achievement award, the National Film Board showcased a short film titled William Shatner sings "Oh Canada".

In the five-minute video, Shatner utters his somewhat witty rendition.

"Oh Canada, cheer up
Our home on native land- on native land
True patriot love - of same sex partnership
In all thy sons command - and our daughters
With glowing hearts - like ET
We see the rise, the true north strong and free — free health care
From far and wide — redundant
Oh Canada - big smile
We stand on guard for thee
God keep our land — all gods or no god
Glorious and free — free of smog
Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee
Oh Canada we stand on guard — guard yourself from frostbite
For — I don't even know what we're doing here — thee"
