Emma Stone seriously can't stop fangirling over the Spice Girls

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is set for release on May 2, but you wouldn't know it by watching star Emma Stone's appearances lately. Instead of drumming up buzz for the big superhero sequel, the actress has been spending most of her time talking about her love of the Spice Girls.

It began in March, when Stone cried while watching a video message from Spice Girls member Mel B (see the video above).

Other media outlets soon followed suit, with a London radio show setting up a Skype call between Stone and Mel C.

Then the actress showed off her talent for forging all five of the Spice Girls' autographs on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

By the time Stone appeared on the U.K.'s "The Graham Norton Show," even she realized that her love of the girl band had begun to eclipse her new movie.

"I was a fiend, I was obsessed with the Spice Girls," Stone said, "I just feel like I've been talking more about the Spice Girls on this press tour than I have about the movie."

But is it any wonder that we'd rather watch Stone fangirl out over the Spice Girls? While 2012's "The Amazing Spider-Man" debuted to big numbers, excitement over the sequel has started to wane.

"I Am Utterly Apathetic About The AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Trailer," wrote Devin Faraci at Badass Digest in December 2013, for instance.

And on io9 in February, Charlie Jane Anders attempted to explain the superhero's lack of enduring charisma when she assessed Sony's new plan to release a Spider-Man movie every year: "Spidey just doesn't have a deep enough bench, by himself, to compare with 'the X-Men and Fantastic Four micro-universes,' or 'all the rest of Marvel.'"

Fans had even begun to complain that "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" featured too many villains — the film features appearances by Electro, The Rhino, and the Green Goblin. The anti-buzz grew to the point that director Marc Webb felt compelled to announce at South by Southwest he was "confident" that the new movie would deliver.

But giving Stone something to talk about other than Spidey is actually a good thing for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." Her fangirl moments have gone viral over the past few months, which means more people will pay attention when the movie is finally released.

And hey, with Ginger Spice, Baby Spice, and Posh Spice yet to talk to Stone, there are plenty of opportunities for more buzz. Let's cross our fingers that a certain quintet of special guests will show up to the New York premiere of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" on April 24.
