A cheeky sign warning drivers in Utah to keep their eyes on the road is drawing some criticism for being offensive.

An electronic road signs read “Get Your Head Out Of Your Apps.” It’s part of the Utah Department of Transportation’s “Message Monday” program.

The funny pun, which is a play on a crasser catch phrase, has sparked over 3000 comments on local station KSL’s Facebook site, which prominently features a picture of the sign. According to a poll conducted by the station, eight per cent of voters felt the message was offensive.

“I understand the concern but did not feel this was appropriate,” wrote one commenter on the KSL Facebook site.

“Maybe those who are upset should get their head out of their apps? Saw it on the way home from work and thought…hmm smart,” wrote another commenter.

“If you’re trying to make an impact, there may be a few people that don’t agree,” the department’s spokesman John Gleason told KSL. “We’re OK with that because the overall goal here is to get people talking.”

Other less provocative road-related Message Monday slogans have included “Texting + driving is clever, said no one ever” and “Scary Drivers Should Stay Home,” which was posted on Halloween.
