Bouncy castle blown 50 feet in the air with children inside

Two young boys were seriously injured Monday when a "bounce house" they were playing in was picked up by a gust of wind and soared 50 feet in the air in South Glen Falls, New York. This video aired on the KTLA 5 News at 10 on Tuesday, May 13, 2014.

When you think of a children’s bouncy castle, words like “horrible,” “dangerous,” and “terrifying” just don’t come to mind.

However, after a gust of wind swept up one of these inflatable castles with 3 children inside of it in upstate New York on Monday, those words were all serious understatements.

It didn’t seem to be a windy day and there were no indications of strong wind gusts in the area, but the bouncy castle was suddenly scooped up into the air by a freak gust of wind, carrying 3 small children with it.

Two boys, ages 5 and 6, were severely injured after the castle was swept approximately 50 feet in the air and then dumped the boys out on the way down. The younger boy broke both of his arms and suffered facial injuries after slamming into a parked car while the 6-year-old, who fell directly onto the asphalt, was hospitalized with a traumatic head injury. There was also a 10-year-old girl in the bouncy castle but she fell out just as it was lifted off the ground, suffering a minor scrape from the shorter fall.

Taylor Seymour, who witnesses the event, told the Post-Star that the sudden blast of wind “picked the structure up and spun it around as if it was in a small tornado.”

Other witnesses ran to help the children but the wind kept carrying the inflatable castle through the air and it was unclear when or where it was going to land.

“It was like a horror movie,” Seymour told the newspaper. “It just kept going up and up. It cleared our building and the trees.”

After clearing a patch of woods, the bouncy castle finally landed in a field behind Oliver W. Winch Middle School, which was nearly 3 blocks from where the play structure was originally set up.

“My older daughters witnessed it and said it was just horrible,” said the mother of the girl who was in the bouncy castle during its liftoff to the Post-Star. “A big gust of wind just blew it right off the ground with the kids in it. It’s just sickening.”

Witnesses told the Post-Star that kids have used the bouncy house in the past without any issues. A resident had set up the inflatable structure for the neighborhood children and made sure to stake it down before allowing the kids to play. Witnesses believe it was just a “freak accident”.
