British man to push a Brussels sprout up a mountain with his nose for charity

Some people run marathons to raise money for cancer research. Some shave their heads. Others walk or bike across the country.

Stuart Kettell, 49, is going to push a Brussels sprout up a mountain — with his nose.

He hopes to raise £5,000 (about $9,100 CAD).

"Now in training for the challenge, I am hoping to get it done in just 4 days," Kettell wrote on his website.

"I will have a backpack on as well with all the camping gear and lots of spare sprouts. It's all on my hands and knees all the way with a plastic nose guard to protect my nose."

Kettell will start pushing a Brussels sprout up Mount Snowdon, Wales, on July 30. A film crew will record the attempt to ensure "there will be no cheating" on the nine-mile trek.

It's his "8th crazy challenge" for Macmillan Cancer Support, following stunts like running seven marathons in seven days in a giant human hamster wheel, walking down every street in Coventry on stilts, and being suspended in the air by helium balloons for seven days. Through these challenges, the father of three has raised £41,000 (almost $75,000 CAD) for cancer research.

"My friend said to me, 'What are you going to do next? Push a pea up Snowdon?'" Kettell told the Metro.

"And I thought, 'That’s a great idea.' Obviously a pea is a little too small so I've chosen to use a sprout instead."

He says his newest challenge will be his toughest:

"This is without doubt the wackiest and most physical and mental challenge so far and has never been attempted before…I wonder why?" he wrote.

The father of three did a trial run to estimate his completion time.

"It took me 50 minutes just to push the sprout a tenth of a mile up the mountain," he told the Metro. "With that in mind I've predicted it's going to take me four days and at least 40 sprouts to complete the challenge. I'm starting to wish I picked a larger vegetable."

"I do actually like sprouts but I think after this I might be put off for life," he said, adding that the back pain from being so crouched over will likely be the hardest part of the challenge.
