Company plans to build massive floating city

Freedom Ship - the $11 billion floating city proposal

Hopeful passengers of the the planned biggest ship ever built might want to stock up on seasickness medicine, because this vessel could be home.

The Florida-based company Freedom Ship International is seeking $1 billion in capital funding to start building a city within a ship — complete with residences, shopping venues, schools and a hospital — that sails constantly around the world. The ship would measure 4,500 feet long and 350 feet high, according to the company.

New York Daily News reported the project was on hold for a while as the company struggled to find investment funds, but the dream of Freedom Ship lives on with photos of the floating city that show a plane taking off from its deck have been circulating through media outlets worldwide. The ship would cost $11 billion to build and it could house 50,000 people and 30,000 visitors.

Contrary to what some might assume, the company's FAQ page insists Freedom Ship isn't intended to become a new, isolated country or a way to sail away from tax obligations. The concept is one of novelty condominium-style living. But residents would have to love the water, because the ship would be too large to dock, relying on aircraft and hydrofoils to bring people to and from land.

Instead of cruises, would residents take long car rides as vacations?
