The Daily BuzzCreepy ‘secret admirer’ letters left on Campbell River trail prompt warning from RCMP
A secret admirer's notes posted on several trees along a Campbell River trail intended for a female dog-walker have prompted the British Columbia RCMP to issue a warning.
RCMP Sergeant Troy Beauregard tells CBC News that while the notes aren’t threatening, the wording "is of some concern."
"We just want people to be vigilant on the trails — beware of your personal safety."
The notes are directed at a young woman and describe how the author had been watching her and her dogs from a distance for some time.
"I see you nearly every lunch hour of mine in here," reads one long typed note. "Everytime [sic] that I see you coming, I want to approach you."

It continues, "I slipped up and almost came out to say hello, but thought better of it. I was too close and you could smell my cologne. I was close enough to hear you ask your friend if she smelt cologne and I watched you stop and smell the air."
It gets creepier:
"You seem to realize when you're being watched, but perhaps your very large, aggressive looking dogs, plus the bear spray and the concealed knife I know that you carry, give you a sense of security."

And while the author insists he does "not intend for this message to scare you," and understands why "people who read this may find it 'creepy,'" the note is now scaring away some women from the trails.

"It's a bit concerning. There are lots of places to hide — if something happens, you may not be found or helped right away," Kim Dorrington, who usually walks the trails with her dogs but is staying away until the letter-writer is found, tells CBC News.
Police have identified the woman for whom the letters were intended — "She wasn't too, too concerned," Beauregard tells CTV News — and are still interested in talking to the writer.
"We're just trying to find out what the intent of the letter was — if it was an awkward attempt for courtship, maybe we need to discuss that," he says.
According to an RCMP press release:
On January 7, 2014 a concerned citizen attended the Campbell River RCMP Detachment regarding a note located in the Beaver Lodge Trails, off of Hilchey Road and South Dogwood Street. The note appeared to be intended for a specific female who walks in the trails with several dogs. Police later learned that there had been series of notes left. While there were no threats of harm, it would appear the author may have been secretly watching this individual for a period of time. Police were able to locate the female involved and speak with her. Investigators are seeking to identify and speak with the male who left the messages.
The police are asking that anyone with information regarding the author of the notes contact Constable Don McIntosh at the Campbell River RCMP: 250-286-6221.

Additionally, Campbell River RCMP would like to take this opportunity to remind members of our community to always be vigilant with regards to your personal safety. When walking in trails and other areas, walk with friends whenever possible and stick to well travelled areas. Advise family, friends or co-workers of your intended path and expected time you will be gone. If you encounter suspicious activity, please report it to your local police.
