Diet Coke and Mentos experiment goes wrong

Mixing Mentos candy with soda is certainly not a new trick.

When the gentlemen from Mythbusters documented the effects on their show, many began conducting their own experiments. But instead of simply watching the foam as it spews into the air, some found a more violent way to trigger the effect.

The gentlemen in the video below found out first hand what can happen when you smash the two-litre bottle into the ground.

A Diet Coke and Mentos bomb? More like a torpedo!

Causing the bottle to launch is the result of a combination of ingredients. When the aspartame, caffeine, potassium benzonate and CO2 from the Diet Coke mixes with the ingredients of the Mentos candy, foam is created at a rapid rate.

Once the cap on the bottle breaks off, the super fast foaming effect launches the bottle toward the cameraman.

But if you like that, you shock the video below in which nearly 2000 students from the the School of Business Administration Turiba in Latvia set off their own Coke and Mentos bombs simultaneously, setting a new Guiness World Record back in 2008.
