Dog suffers rare allergy to humans

It’s not uncommon for someone to complain of their pet allergies acting up.

What is very rare, however, is for a pet to have an allergic reaction to its owner — but it appears that a black lab named Adam is allergic to humans.

Adam arrived at the Lucky Dog Retreat Rescue in Indianapolis, Indiana, with a mysterious ailment.

"We feed him the best food possible, got him flea free, gave him baths twice a week, special baths from the vet," Robin Herman, who runs the rescue, told RTV6.

"We still couldn’t figure out what was wrong, so we took him in for a blood test."

Test results indicated that Adam was having an allergic reaction to people.

"So, Adam — our little skin / flea / food / dermatitis allergy dog? That we’ve been working with since July from IACC? He’s tests came back today….. he’s allergic to….. wait for it…… PEOPLE!" Herman wrote on Facebook.

"I laughed. I thought the vet was kidding. The vet said she wasn’t, and I laughed again," Herman told The Dodo. “Then she explained that just like people can be allergic to dog dander, dogs can be allergic to human dander. She was surprised too. She’d never seen it before.”

Herman hopes that the diagnosis will allow the staff at Lucky Dog Retreat Rescue to better treat the dog — starting with allergy shots.

"The vet seems to think we can fix him. They put a serum together just like with kids’ allergies, and he starts on allergy shots this week," Herman said.

Herman hopes Adam will eventually get well enough to live a normal life with a new family.

"As long as he wants to keep going at it, we’ll keep going at it with him," she vowed. “He’s just too sweet and funny…He’s a special little dog.”
