Drone footage captures rare sighting of whales hunting down a shark

Witness nature in action as a hungry pod of rarely seen false killer whales hunt down a shark off the coast of Sydney, Australia.

The exciting aerial drone footage, filmed near the beachside suburb of Cronulla, provides a stunning view of several whales chasing down and killing a juvenile shark.

The group of false killer whales can be seen in steady pursuit of the young shark as they attempt to tire it out. Eventually, the whales gain the upper hand, and the exhausted shark is snatched and dragged down below.

Drone hobbyist Bruno Kataoka was lucky enough to accidentally stumble upon this dynamic display of marine life.

“We did not expect to see what we saw. It was an exciting moment,” he told 7 News Sydney.

The chance to see false killer whales, which actually belong to the dolphin family, hunting down their prey is not a typical sight to behold.

According to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, false killer whales are usually only found in deep tropical waters. As well, their sparse population means relatively little is known about this particular marine species.
