Ed Sheeran helps Canadian man propose to girlfriend battling cancer

A Saskatoon woman battling cancer received an unforgettable marriage proposal thanks to one of her favourite singers: Ed Sheeran.

Pablo Benitez proposed to his girlfriend, Tanya Procyshyn, at Ed Sheeran’s show just one day before Procyshyn was scheduled to undergo surgery for a brain tumour, CTV News reports.

But the dream proposal almost didn’t happen.

Originally, the two weren’t fortunate enough to snag tickets to Sheeran’s sold out show. But after Benitez met Sheeran at a private function a few days before the concert, he told the musician his story. Without hesitation the popstar gave him two front-row seats to his show to help the dream come alive.

During the concert, when Sheeran played Procyshyn’s favourite song, “Thinking Out Loud,” Benitez popped the question.

In a tweet, Benitez shared a picture of him and his soon-to-be wife, and wrote “she said yes,” before thanking Sheeran for helping make “her wish come true.”

As it happened, Sheeran took a few seconds out of his routine to give the happy couple a shout out.

“I’m just going to stop here for two seconds. A couple in the front row just got engaged. Congratulations!”

Procyshyn’s sister, Amanda Bruneau, said that the moment was “special for the whole family.”

“It gives her something to look forward to, something to fight for, just bring her happiness through all of this that she’ll be going through,” Bruneau told CBC News.

After hearing the heartwarming story, local radio station, C95, set up a GoFundMe page to help fund the couple’s wedding.

“With our amazing listeners and clients, we’re putting together a wedding for them once Tanya recovers from surgery,” the C95 Team wrote on the page.

“Tanya’s dream is to see Niagara Falls. With your help we hope to help Pablo and Tanya have the most amazing wedding.”

Over $1,600 has been donated, with more than 50 people contributing at last count.
