First copy of Charlie Hebdo on eBay sells for $175,000

If you're looking to get your hands on the latest issue of Charlie Hebdo magazine, get ready to open your wallet ... wide.

Tuesday's edition is the first to be published since the Paris-based magazine was targeted by Islamic terrorists a week ago, in which 12 people were killed. Survivors of the attack put out the latest edition using borrowed offices.

The print run for this edition was 3 million, about 50 times the usual circulation. The magazine plans to publish 2 million more copies, to be circulated slowly over the coming weeks.

Newsstands around France sold out of the magazine before dawn, with scuffles reported at kiosks. The edition features a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad on its cover, believed to be the reason gunmen targeted Charlie Hebdo offices for their terrorist attack.

While 1,500 copies will be available at newsstands in Toronto, Vancouver, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Quebec on Friday, many are turning to eBay to bid on a copy of the historic magazine.

The first copy on eBay sold Tuesday morning for £95,500 — roughly $175,000 Canadian.

A second copy, set to expire at 11:15 am ET, was quickly bid up to £80,100, which is about $150,00 CAD.

Charlie Hebdo is usually only available in Quebec and just one store in Toronto. In Toronto, it will be available at the Gateway Newsstands at Yonge & St. Clair and Brookfield Place, at Presse Internationale on Bloor and on Queen West, and at International News on Front Street.
