Flying bike prototype hovers briefly in Prague, E.T. nowhere to be seen

Cyclists will soon prevail over traffic and all things gravitational if a flying bike prototype finds success.

Of course, the flying bike can only hover a few metres above the ground, and only for about five minutes at a time, according to the BBC. I'll keep my dreams of skies filled with cyclists gliding E.T.-style filed away in the "not likely" folder for now.

But the researchers who created the flying bike and tested it in Prague told the BBC that further developments could let us hover above ground as we play sports or tour cities.

It would certainly be better than the current, gravity-bound adaptation of the sport from Harry Potter known as Quidditch.

The broadcaster points out that history has brought us other attempts to fly on bicycles, including the Flyke, a bike with a parachute attached to it.

An Australian inventor has also built a vehicle called The Hoverbike.

Here's hoping these innovative designs yield more promising results than aviettes, the early 20th century winged bicycles that relied on a passenger's vigorous peddling to lift off the ground.

Bike lines could have been much more complicated.
