Gas station employee fired for leaving disgruntled note to boss

Joe Blumm

In the words of Donald Trump: "You're fired."

In this case, maybe for less legitimate reasons.

According to Gawker, Joe Blumm, a gas station worker at a West Michigan BP station, was fired after leaving a note for his boss, who never showed up to take over for him when his shift ended Thursday morning.

Blumm waited more than an hour after his shift ended for his boss to relieve him. Finally, he got fed up, locked the doors and went home, but not before leaving the note posted to the station door.

It read: “Hey boss, learn to be on time or at least communicate when you are going to be late. +1 hour with no phone call is unacceptable. As you can see, the doors are locked. I went home. Fire me if you must, but realize I walked due to YOUR negligence. –Joe.”

That’s exactly what his boss did and Blumm was fired on Friday.

However, someone who had already seen the note photographed it and posted it to Reddit, where it quickly went viral over the weekend.

Blumm never expected the note to cause such a stir, but he said he wasn’t shocked when he was fired. He couldn’t believe how fast his little note went viral. “I noticed it was in the top five of their (reddit.com) hot list and I started freaking out a little,” Blumm told Fox17online.

He knows that a lot of disgruntled, low-paid employees who work there get the short end of the stick and he hopes that his slight internet fame will help him find a better job.

His frustrations before leaving the note had been building for a while. After working overnight and then having to wait more than an hour with no sign of his boss’s arrival, he’d had enough.

“I had it,” said Blumm. “I had enough of that unprofessional atmosphere, having to deal with that tardiness and have it come down on me,” he added.

His manager admitted that she was late for her shift Thursday morning, but added that Blumm had never called her.

Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise for Mr. Blumm … maybe his viral note will land him work in a more professional environment.
