Gay couple tricks “homophobic” pizzeria into catering wedding

Months after an infamous Indiana pizzeria stated it would not cater a same-sex wedding, a trickster couple devised a plan to trump this discriminatory company policy.

Last week, Robin Trevino of GayCo Productions, a sketch comedy group, drove to Walkerton, Indiana to visit Memories Pizza, a small town family-owned business that made headlines this past spring.

Trevino traveled to Indiana as part of GayCo’s 50 States of Gay, a series celebrating the Supreme Court decision which legalized same-sex marriage across the United States by choosing a different state out of a hat each week.

Last week, Trevino picked Indiana, and drove from Illinois to purchase pizza for his legal marriage ceremony to his long-time partner, with whom he has a one-year-old daughter. Trevino then drove back with the pizzas in a cooler, serving them to guests at his wedding the next day.

“If a gay couple came in and wanted us to provide pizzas for their wedding, we would have to say no,” pizzeria employee Crystal O'Connor told ABC News earlier this year.

O’Connor’s public statement came on the heels of the controversial Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which proclaimed the state cannot create legislation that infringes on a person’s religious beliefs.

The act jumped into the spotlight when many interpreted this as a way for businesses to legally discriminate against the non-protected LGBT community.

The pizzeria briefly closed after the April 2015 controversy, but reopened to much fanfare, including a crowdfunding donation of more than $842,000.
