Georgia town passes law requiring everyone to own a gun

Come on down to Nelson, Georgia, the most welcoming town in America, where everyone is required by law to own a gun.

Gun stores in the small town of Nelson are about to get a lot more business if residents take seriously a new ordinance that makes it illegal not to own a firearm.

According to the Associated Press, city council approved an ordinance on Monday night that requires families to keep a gun. The councilor who sponsored the bill, Duane Cronic, told the news wire he thinks the measure will make the town safer.

The image of walking into a city with the knowledge that everyone you greet could shoot you seems to suggest otherwise.

The law is posted on the city of Nelson's website under the title "Family Protection Ordinance."

NOW THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Nelson hereby ordains that Chapter 38 of the Code of the City of Nelson be amended as follows to add Section 38-6 to Article I of said Chapter:

Sec. 38-6. Heads of households to maintain firearms.

Here's hoping no residents consider the dog the head of their household. It's unclear what imminent threat city council sees bearing down on its little town, seeing as Nelson only has one police officer who told the Associated Press the last homicide took place more than five years ago.

Residents won't be waiting for knocks on their doors to verify their gun ownership anyway, because even Cronic says authorities won't enforce the measure. It contains no penalties for failing to comply and certain people are exempt, including felons and some people with disabilities, according to the news report.

The pizza shop in Virginia that's been offering deals to gun owners would get plenty of customers here. In fact, it might provide so many discounts that it would go out of business.
