Helmet cam captures man’s terrifying slide down snowy mountain

Climber Mark Roberts experiences one of the most terrifying moments of his life after plummeting 100ft down the side of a Welsh mountain.

The good news: Mark Roberts got some incredible footage of Parsley Fern Left-hand Gully in Wales, UK.

The bad news: He had to fall 30.5 m (100 feet) down the side of Snowdown mountain to get it.

The 47-year-old safety consultant had geared up for a wintery climb with two friends. A lifelong climber, he no doubt believed that February 24 trek would be a trek like any other.

But an errant chunk of falling ice had other, more nefarious plans. As Roberts explained to the British Mountaineering Council, the ice knocked him off his rocky perch and sent him careening down the side of the mountain.

All of this would have been little more than an interesting anecdote at climbing parties were it not for the helmet camera attached to Roberts’ cranium.

In the best bit of publicity the camera manufacturers could ever dream up, the camera remains clear and steadfast throughout the climber’s deep descent. A sparkling product endorsement if there ever was one.

Thankfully, Roberts managed to come out of his terrifying fall alive, if not the worse for wear. He counts a broken ankle and a host of bruises among the worst of the collateral damage.

His long experience as a climber no doubt prevented him from accruing any more critical injury.

“There was no feeling of panic, more a concerted effort to protect my head and neck and be aware of what was below me, where I was heading and what I could do to slow and stop myself before I got to the more serious rocky outcrops,” he said.

"Fortunately I slid into a rocky outcrop on my left with a bit of a thump which took some of the momentum out of my decent, resulting in a bit of a spin, but I could still look for opportunities below for a point to stop.”

He was also conscious enough to voice what everyone watching the video was likely thinking for the entire duration. “That f*****g hurt!” he mumbles.

No s***.
