‘Hobbit’ star causes a ruckus at Toronto’s Union Station

The morning commute at Toronto's Union station on Monday was interrupted by hobbits and dwarves.

Richard Armitage, a star in the upcoming Hobbit film, showed up bright and early for a promotional event showcasing visuals from the film, during which fans could win tickets to a special screening taking place tonight, according to a press release from Warner Brothers Canada.

Fans crowded around the actor, inciting reports of mania and mobbing.

Armitage will play the dwarf leader Thorin Oakenshield in the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first in the film trilogy. He wasn't looking very dwarfish, however, in a vest and suit, at least not judging by this 1970s animated Hobbit film. Onlookers pointed out that he's actually quite tall.

The film also stars Ian McKellen, returning as Gandalf, and Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins.

Posts are quickly piling up detailing his busy travels around the city, including several interviews, while commuters on Twitter also posted sightings of people clad in hobbit costumes wandering around the station.

Armitage is expected to attend the premiere at the Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto this evening.
