Indonesia mulls replacing guards with crocodiles in new prison

Many prison inmates attempt to break free from the confines of their cells and the walls that house them in last ditch attempts at freedom, but what if their jailers are crocodiles?

It’s not that far-fetched of an idea.

Indonesian officials are considering the option after the country’s anti-drugs chief, Budi Waseso, pitched the idea of using the reptiles to guard a new island prison meant to house death row drug convicts.

“We will place as many crocodiles as we can there,” Waseso was quoted as saying to a local news site, Tempo.

“You can’t bribe crocodiles,” he told the site. “You can’t convince them to let inmates escape.”

The country has already put some of the world’s toughest anti-drug laws into effect, including death by firing squad for traffickers, according to The Guardian.

Indonesia also reportedly sparked international uproar after carrying out death sentences in April against seven foreign drug convicts, including two Australians.

The plan is only in the discussion phases right now, but, if it becomes reality, Waseso better hope the inmates don’t have the same sly moves as James Bond.
