Jan Monson catches Calgary’s bad drivers on tape

Jan Monson captures Calgary's worst drivers on video and uploads the clips to YouTube.

You’d be lying if you said you haven’t made a few poor decisions while driving.

Well, if you live in Calgary, it’s possible those bad driving habits have been caught on camera and posted to YouTube by Jan Monson.

Monson, who makes a daily commute across Calgary, stopped scolding the idiots he spotted on the road and started recording them instead.

He installed a dash-cam on his vehicle so that he could post their driving disasters on YouTube.

Monson’s goal is to enlighten drivers in Calgary on the bad driving habits that many people have. (And by many I mean you could fill your day with videos of dumb drivers on YouTube)

From forgetting to signal to texting behind the wheel, it’s evident that there are some people that just shouldn’t be allowed to drive.

How about my personal favorite, the woman who’s fully doing her make-up while trying to drive to work. Put down the mascara lady, you are operating a motor vehicle!

Monson isn’t alone in his attempts at showcasing the errors people make when driving. Especially with the invention of cameras like the GoPro, there are so many people catching crazy clips of terrible drivers.

According to the Calgary Herald, Monson says he makes a daily commute from Beddington Trail to Glenmore Landing. “I could put together a clip of that entire drive and have three or four incidents every day,” he says.

Monson hopes people will watch his videos and learn from them. He admits he is a bit of an obsessive safe driver.

“I’m the guy that signals in an empty parking lot at four in the morning to turn into a parking stall,” he says.

Calgary police say dash cam videos could be useful in prosecuting driving offenders. According to Staff Sergeant Paul Stacey in the CPS traffic division, having a dash cam can boost a case but it’s only part of what’s needed for a dangerous conviction.

For example: Even if you have a dash cam and you catch a drunk driver, the old rules still apply. The footage will add credibility, but police must still come out and identify the person and prepare to testify in court.
