Jian Ghomeshi in 1996 video: 'All my fans make me sick'

Among the recent descriptions of Jian Ghomeshi – currently the subject at the centre of a sexual assault scandal – words like smug, entitled and egotistic tend to surface again and again.

Even Ed the Sock, in a Halloween Facebook rant on the Ghomeshi scandal, said that the former CBC-Radio host “just oozed smug,” and was “an entitled, arrogant empty shell.”

It’s one thing to get a personal attack from a celebrity hand puppet and something completely different to see the Canadian celebrity address his fans in an intimate, behind-the-scenes video.

Earlier this week, YouTube user ItsJustDave posted a video of young Ghomeshi in 1996 when he was a member of the band Moxy Fruvous. In the video, the former Q host sings “All my fans make me sick / All my fans are pretty thick / I’d like to beat them with a f***ing big stick.”

Warning: Video contains strong language that may be offensive to some viewers.

According to the ItsJustDave, the video was shot “during my college days in radio,” he writes in the video’s description. “I arranged to interview the band after their set and had a friend behind the camera. As he was getting familiar with the camera, he captured this.”

The video shows Ghomeshi playing piano and speaking directly to the camera. There’s no indication if he is serious or just hamming it up.

“I just want to say, it sounds like a bit of a joke song, but it’s something that I really mean,” Ghomeshi says in the video. “I just find that there’s a lot of people – for instance at the Buffalo show tonight – in the audience who are, for lack of a better term, losers.”

The former CBC host, fired Oct. 26 over allegations of abuse, goes on to say how much he enjoys snubbing fans. “Yeah, I’m saying this with a smile, but I am serious.”

Three women have come forward to Toronto police with allegations of abuse, but Ghomeshi has not been charged with any criminal offence and he has said that all acts involving rough sex with women were consensual. He has filed a $55 million lawsuit against the CBC over his firing.
