John Oliver gave his satirical point-of-view on Canada’s senate scandal in the latest episode of ‘Last Week Tonight.’

A report revolving around questionable spending by senators has identified just under $1 million in wrongful expense claims. Some of those expenses include hockey tickets and fishing trips, which Oliver poked fun at for being so stereotypically Canadian.

“This scandal could not be any more Canadian if public money was used to get Drake to drink maple syrup on Niagara Falls,” he joked.

Oliver later ate his words when he went on to mention that Senator Terry Mercer charged taxpayers nearly $3,500 so he could attend the 100th anniversary of the Toronto Curling Club.

“Kudos, Canada. You made this scandal more Canadian after I explicitly said that it could not be done. Well played.”

But despite all of the fun Oliver had in mocking our home and native land, he noted the discrepancy between the $1 million found in wrongful spending and the nearly $24 million it cost to run.

“How the hell do you spend nearly $24 million auditing stamps and breakfast?” asked Oliver.

Oliver then teased Senator Nancy Ruth about her comments regarding the “awful” airline breakfasts that consisted of “ice-cold camembert” and “broken crackers.”

“Let this be a lesson to all politicians: it is hard to elicit any kind of public sympathy when you’re uttering a sentence that includes the word ‘camembert.’”

The scandal, which received plenty of laughs from his audience, prompted Oliver suggest Canadians have “forgotten what a scandal is.”

“And may I remind you that Rob Ford, your crack-smoking-mayor, is still currently sitting on the Toronto city council.”
