Joke tweet about terrorism lands 14-year-old Dutch girl in jail

A Twitter user made a joke about terrorism that backfired badly.

Here's a tip: Don't make jokes about terrorism.

That's a lesson one Twitter user has learned the hard way, after a tweet make in jest has led to her apparent arrest and the removal of her account from the popular social media site.

On Sunday, a Twitter user named Sarah with the handle @QueenDemetriax_ sent out a tweet to American Airlines that read: "@AmericanAir hello my name's Ibrahim and I'm from Afghanistan. I'm part of Al Qaida and on June 1st I'm gonna do something really big bye."

American Airlines quickly responded to the tweet:

@QueenDemetriax_ Sarah, we take these threats very seriously. Your IP address and details will be forwarded to security and the FBI.

Now, it's unlikely that the airline had Sarah's IP address or "details" ... because those can only be requested by law enforcement. But it was enough to put the user into a panic.

@AmericanAir omfg I was just kidding

@AmericanAir I'm so sorry I'm scared now

@AmericanAir I was kidding pls don't I'm just a girl pls

According to BNO News, a 14-year-old Dutch girl was arrested early this morning in connection with the tweets, and her Twitter account has been disabled. She was taken into custody for making a "false report," but no formal charges have been laid.
