Just in time for tomorrow’s game: Ottawa and Montreal mayors agree on playoff wagers

It’s smoked meat vs. Beavertails.

After “some hard-fought negotiation” between the offices of Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson and Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre, the playoff wager terms have been settled.

If Ottawa wins the Canadiens-Senators NHL playoff series, which begins on Wednesday, Coderre will wear a Senators jersey to a council meeting — and wave the winning team’s flag at city hall for a week.

If Montreal wins, Watson will do the same: don a Canadiens jersey and raise Montreal’s flag at city hall.

And because no wager is complete without a snack or two thrown in, Coderre will send smoked meat to Watson if Ottawa wins, and Watson will send Beavertails to Coderre if Montreal wins.

Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi and Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson, who will also see their respective teams face off on Wednesday, have yet to finalize their playoff wagers.

Winnipeg mayor Brain Bowman isn’t making any Jets bets, fearing that it might jinx his city’s team.

“You know what, we haven’t, I don’t want to jinx things,” Bowman told CBC News of making any wagers with Anaheim’s mayor. “We’ll wait until we get to the final for that sort of thing but right now we want the cup and I want to be very careful. I know some of the players can be very superstitious and I don’t want to jinx things.

"Winnipeggers want the cup. We’ve waited a long time and we’re going to be there to cheer on our hometown team,” Bowman added.

Who are you cheering for? (And if you were mayor, what would your wager be?)
