Kansas farmer serenades cattle with Lorde’s ‘Royals’ on trombone

Derek Klingenberg's cattle must be Lorde fans.

When the 35-year-old Peabody, Kansas, farmer starts playing Lorde's "Royals" on the trombone in an empty field, cows slowly appear on the horizon, making their way toward the source of the music.

They eventually gather in front Klingenberg — and even join in with a little harmony.

"Yesterday morning was so beautiful. I left very early in the morning. There is something wonderful about playing a trombone in the middle of a prairie to 380 heifers. I must say I had no idea that the video would be such a hit," he wrote on Facebook the day after he posted the video.

In the two days since it was posted, the video has been viewed more than 1 million times.

Klingenberg, who used to play trombone in the Kansas State University marching band, told the New York Daily News that for the past few weeks, he's been using music to let the cattle know it's snack time.

"When they hear it they know they're getting a treat," he said of the molasses snack the cows were anticipating. "They're curious. They're a good audience."

Klingenberg runs Klingenberg Farms Studios with his father and two brothers, and regularly posts fun videos relating to their life on the farm.

Hits from the farm so far include the Frozen parody, "Do you want to drive my tractor?" — which includes cameos from his young daughters — and "Ranching Awesome," a parody of "Thrift Shop."

"Ranching Awesome" features a cameo appearance from his rancher father.

"We asked him to do it in front of my mom so he couldn't turn us down," Derek told Kansas Profile. "My parents have really supported me on this stuff."

Klingenberg's "What Does the Farmer Say?" video has racked up more than 5 million views.

"I want people to see that farmers are good people and we're working hard to produce food, and we love the animals and the land," he said of the viral videos.
