Last month, luxury car maker Lexus got Back to the Future fans excited with their teaser video showing a real-life hoverboard.

Now, the company has released a new video showing the hoverboard in action after spending over a year to build it.

Professional skateboarder Ross McGouran is seen in the video testing out the high-tech device, SLIDE. It’s clear that even he experienced a learning curve.

“Everything I knew about skating went out the window,” McGouran told Lexus.

The hoverboard works by using liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets to achieve its floating movement.

According to the Lexus website, the hoverboard needs a skate park “that empowers the best ride,” which means it requires a track containing permanent magnets in order to maintain its levitation above ground.

An ordinary concrete park will not suffice.

Lexus had to re-design a traditional skateboard park using “almost 200 metres of magnetic track,” which was transported to Cubelles, Spain to create the dynamic test.

McGouran was then able to test out the board in the Hoverpark.

Despite the early tumbles, McGouran eventually was able to do some stunts on the hoverboard like grinding off the railings and even jumping over a Lexus car onto a ramp.

But according the Verge, it doesn’t appear the SLIDE can hover very long. After “the liquid nitrogen evaporates, the board loses its superconductivity.”

And sadly, it doesn’t look like Lexus will be selling hoveboards to consumers anytime soon.

“After an introduction from Lexus officials, we learned that Lexus had hired an advertising agency to produce an ad featuring the hoverboard - so no, Lexus did not manufacture the hoverboard itself (strike two), and yes, the board was a publicity play (strike three),” reported the Verge.

Twitter, however, was awestruck.
