Looking for some Halloween fun? How about being locked in a room with a zombie?

At some point in life, ghosts and goblins on neighbourhood porches lose their lustre and even scary movies fail to really get the blood pumping.

If this has happened to you, we’ve found the answer: A real-life room escape.

Room escapes are a growing trend for those who’d rather live the Saw adventure than just watch it from the comfort of the living room couch. You are locked in a room with nothing but your wits and some clues to escape, usually within a specified time limit.

We’re generally not talking about being shackled to a toilet with a hacksaw in the tank, but you get the idea.

Popular throughout Asia and Europe, escape rooms are starting to catch on in Canada, too. There are a number of group-based escape games available in the Toronto area.

But one room escape company has taken things one step further, by throwing a hungry zombie in the mix.

Room Escape Adventures – with locations in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and yes, Toronto – offers a game in which up to 12 people are locked in a room with a zombie chained to the wall. Every five minutes a buzzer sounds and the chain is released another foot from the wall. The group has 60 minutes to use clues in the room to find the key and escape from the room.

According to the company, participants must sign waivers in advance and prepare to have the phlegm scared out of them.

“Once the doors are locked they will not open again until someone escapes or we need to remove bodies,” the company’s website states.

Talk about team building. There’s nothing quite like solving a real-life puzzle with the pressure of a growling zombie lurching at you.
