Man caught with cocaine says he didn’t know it was illegal

Cocaine is legal in Florida? Whaaaat?

Obviously no one is stupid enough to believe that, right?

Wrong.

Key West resident, Guy Lanchester, 46, was jailed Sunday for allegedly trying to ditch a bag of cocaine in a planter, but he “didn’t know cocaine was illegal.”

Officers were called to the Pier House Resort on Sunday after reports of three suspicious people were standing behind the Conch Tour Station and possibly trespassing.

When the police arrived, Lanchester got up from his seat, and walked over to a flowerpot, fumbling with a small plastic bag of white powder.

It’s not likely the guy just wanted to smell the flowers.

He’d probably done enough “smelling” of things for the evening as he attempted to stash the bag into the flowerpot.

How very discreet of you, Mr. Lanchester. Don’t worry; I don’t think that cop who watched you walk directly over to that flowerpot for no apparent reason has any idea what you’ve been doing.

Wrong again. The officer retrieved the bag from the flowerpot and tested the substance, which obviously proved to be cocaine.

According to NBC Miami, Lanchester was arrested and when he got to jail he told police, “I don’t understand … I thought cocaine wasn’t illegal in Florida.”

Why did you try and hide the bag, then?

Being negligent is never going to get you off. But what if you’re from an entirely different country and you have no idea of the state laws?

Check out the story of a family of Japanese tourists who set off a high-speed police pursuit in southern Utah because they didn’t know they rules of the road.

Patrol cars thought it was a drunk driver out on a rampage, but shockingly enough, it was just a Japanese family in a rental car, who clearly had some trouble with U.S. traffic laws.

The tourists were finally stopped by police and surrounded by heavily armed officers. That’s one very big foreign "Oops"!
