Man smashes house with a crane while proposing to girlfriend

A crane tipped over and crashed into the roof of a house in the Netherlands after a marriage proposal went wrong. .

Some grand gestures need better planning.

This is one of them.

A Dutchman’s elaborate proposal to his girlfriend concluded a giant hole in her neighbours’ roof.

The plan: To descend to his girlfriend’s bedroom window in IJsselstein using a crane, sing her a song, and ask her to marry him.

The forgotten part of the plan: To secure the crane.

Sure enough, the crane toppled and bashed a hole in the neighbours’ roof, requiring an evacuation of six surrounding apartments. The would-be fiancé jumped to safety just in time.

When a larger crane arrived to right the tilted crane, the first crane fell again — smashing new holes through the roof.

“The crane the man wanted to use to propose fell on a house. During the attempt to right it, the crane unfortunately slipped and fell on the house again,” emergency services spokesman Jelle Mulder told AFP.

“We’re looking at the best way to lift the crane without it falling again,” said Mulder.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the proposal-gone-wrong, although “the people in the house the crane fell on are deeply shocked,” Mulder said.

According to the AFP, authorities will now decide if the house is structurally unsafe and needs to be demolished.

Here’s hoping everyone involved had insurance.

Despite the chaos at the scene, the man’s girlfriend still accepted his proposal.

The newly engaged couple are reportedly celebrating their engagement in Paris.
