Massive ice pillar snaps with climber on it, and he survives

A man fell from an ice pillar in a newly-released video

This video will literally take your breath away.

Mountain guide and rope access supervisor, John Freeman takes us with him in this video that captures his brush with death.

Recently in the climbing news for establishing a new route at Helmcken Falls, B.C., Freeman is a professional climber who definitely knows his way around a mountain. However, as most of us know, things don’t always go perfectly, and in this exclusive footage that has not been released for over two years, Freeman can attest to the fact that anything can happen.

In this EpicTV series Sub-Zero video, Freeman walks us through his experience of one fateful day when suddenly, the worst happens.

The pillar of ice that Freeman was climbing on snapped and detached from the cliff face, plunging to the ground, and taking Freeman with it.

During the climb, Freeman was wearing a GoPro camera on his helmet capturing the fateful moment when the ice cracked, and our hearts stop.

Armed with a helmet, ice tools, ropes, carabineers, and crampons, Freeman takes all the necessary safety precautions while climbing this giant ice face. Until, the unthinkable happens.

“I took five swings. And that fifth one unleashed everything,” Freeman recalls.

He remembers the sound of the ice breaking, and that sensation of movement as he fell towards the earth with the realization that the whole thing was collapsing.

He held on tight and hoped for the best, knowing this could very well be the last climb he will ever make.

Freeman was in shock that he was alive after he hit the ground.

“The sharp pieces of ice just digging in my body as I was sliding along the ground. At this point I’m just waiting for it to stop, and the dust cloud clears and,” he recalls, chuckling. “And, I’m alive.”

Freeman walked away laughing that day on the mountain when he nearly lost his life, and smiled when he said he went back out to climb again, the very next day.
