Must-see videos of the week – May 10

Charles Ramsey Has a Rap Sheet

From North America's newest Internet meme sensation to a high school student's rant about a shoddy teacher, we've seen some great videos this week. Here are a few of our favourites:

1. Charles Ramsey describes finding missing women

Charles Ramsey quickly went from an ordinary man enjoying a Big Mac to an American hero when he assisted in the rescue of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, three women who had been kidnapped in Ohio nearly a decade ago. His colourful interviews, highlighted by statements such as "Bro, I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man's arms," quickly made the rounds online, launching Ramsey into a new realm of Internet stardom.

2. High school student's rant about teacher goes viral

So much for Teacher Appreciation Day. Jeff Bliss, a student at Duncanville High School in Texas, chose an interesting day to highlight his teacher's pedagogical follies. Video of his rant quickly went viral, and in the face of his newfound stardom, Bliss is not standing down. "I want to see a teacher stand up and interact with the students. Get involved, discuss, talk, question and get deep into the subject," he said in the video. Mike Gloady (@mikegloady) shared his thoughts on Twitter: "Nice one Jeff. At leat ONE person in that room was giving a damn about educating the students. Shame it wasn't the teacher."

3. 3D printed gun test fire

3D printing technology can create some wonderful things — jewelry, pez dispensers, "magic arms" for a four-year-old girl with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita — but this is downright scary. In a video that's eerily reminiscent of the Clint Eastwood film In the Line of Fire, a man successfully test-fires a 3D printed handgun in Austin, Texas. Cody Wilson, a 25-year-old law student at the University of Texas, is a member of a group called Defence Destributed. A self-proclaimed "crypto-anarchist," Wilson created this plastic gun with an $8,000 3D printer bought online. In the video, Wilson defends his creation while acknowledging that it could be used to hurt people. A remarkable advancement of technology, indeed, but we're now very aware of the potential dangers of 3D printing.

4. Time-lapse video captures construction of World Trade Center

We published photos of the view from the top of One World Trade Center earlier in the week, but this time-lapse video of the construction at ground zero is something else! With the spire having recently been installed at the top of the tower, One World Trade Center is now recognized as the tallest building in the Western hemisphere and the third tallest in the world: 1,776ft, which is a reference to the year of America's independence.

5. Astronomers witness Australian eclipse

Several astronomers gathered this week in Australia to catch the "ring of fire," the annular solar eclipse that can be seen throughout the south Pacific. The weather was not perfect, but observers still got some spectacular shots as the moon slowly blacked out 95 per cent of the sun. "The next solar eclipse will be on Nov. 3," reveals Y! Canada News blogger Scott Sutherland. "It will be visible in the morning, across the equatorial Atlantic Ocean, northeast parts of South America, southern Europe and across Africa."
