Must-see videos of the week – August 16

From a giant snake to a highway sign violently swinging in the wind, we've seen some great videos and here are some of the best.

1. Monster python caught in Florida

The largest ever python captured in Florida was caught earlier this week as part of a project to figure out how to control the python population. The Burmese python weighed 75 kilograms, was more than five metres long and was pregnant with 87 eggs. The species is not native to the Everglades and is considered to be invasive.

The pythons usually feast on birds, deer and alligators. They kill their prey by coiling and suffocating them before swallowing them whole.

2. Nova Scotia dog shot 50 times looking for home

Buck the dog was shot about 50 times with pellets and now this loving creature has made almost a full recovery and is ready to be adopted. Luckily, a lot of the pellet wounds were superficial, but buck is now blind in his right eye. This hasn't slowed him down and people at the Dartmouth shelter say he shows no signs of abuse and loves people.

3. Wild Calgary weather

There were some dramatic weather photos and video out of Alberta this week, including massive chunks of hail, torrential downpours, downed trees and a window washing crew breaking the glass of a high-rise to get off their gondola. But the most dramatic video is that of a highway sign along Deerfoot Trail to violently bounce in the wind before snapping in half, narrowly missing cars. The storm packed winds of more than 100 km/h.

4. U.S. anchors talk about Mayor Ford

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is in trouble again for his acts on the road. This week a picture was tweeted of him reading while driving his new Cadillac Escalade on the Gardiner Expressway. And when later asked if it was him at a press conference he said, "Yeah, probably, yeh. I'm try[ing] to catch up on my work and you know I keep my eyes on the road, but I'm a busy man."

This is followed by other driving acts such as talking on his phone and flipping the bird to a fellow resident and her daughter and it finally reached the level where the U.S. media are picking up on it.

5. Alligator attacks trainer

Doing this is probably not advised unless you are a Burmese python, in which case you can swallow the alligator whole. A trainer for the 'Kachunga and the Alligator Show' was attacked by an alligator after placing his arm near its mouth at the Cuyahoga County Fair in Ohio. Luckily, one of his colleagues managed to save the day, and the victim only suffered minor flesh wounds.
