Fishermen catch 8-foot, 300-pound mako shark in unusual fashion

From a shark jumping in a boat to an amazing rescue on the outside of a skyscraper, we've seen some great videos this week. Here are some of our favourites:

1. Shark jumps into fishermen's boat (use catch of the day fox video)

When Captain Tom Rostron Jr. and Clint Simek when fishing for sharks off the coast of New Jersey they probably didn't think it would be so easy and so dangerous. In a scene that may have been like Bert and Ernie fishing, a 138-kilogram, 2.5-meter long mako shark leapt right into their boat. But it's hard to imagine the fishermen singing "here fishy, fishy, fishy." They spotted a shark coming for them and had seen it do about five jumps out of the water. They then saw the shark leap about five metres up, do a somersault and land in their boat. It flopped around biting everything it could, causing $5,000 worth of damage to the vessel. The men used scrub brushes to defend themselves.

2. Window washer rescued from 44 storeys up

Stephen Schmidt and Victor Carballo were doing routine maintenance 44 storeys above the ground near the top of the Hearst Tower in New York City when their scaffolding or window washing gondola broke. More than 100 firefighters were dispatched to rescue the workers. When the designs for the building were first proposed, a prospective owner knew right away there would be an issue cleaning the windows. A Toronto firm designed a special platform just for the building that can fold around its centre, which The New Yorker talked about in a February article. The city's Department of Buildings and the state's Department of Labor are investigating.

3. Woman in wheelchair inspires while scuba diving

When artist Sue Austin contracted an infection and was confined to a wheelchair 16 years ago, she probably never thought she would be able to move like she can in this video. She didn't like being viewed as limited so in 2005 she learned to scuba dive. At first engineers told her the special chair, which spins and flips would be impossible, but she says that just made her want to do it even more. She has delivered a popular TED talk and performed underwater acrobatics in her customized wheelchair as part of the 2012 London Paralympics Cultural Olympiad.

4. Baby sea lion climbs into sailboat (use friendly sea lion abc clip)

This has apparently been a big couple weeks for animals getting into boats, but this sailor in California had a much safer, and much cuter encounter. A baby sea lion approached J.R. Gilkinson's boat, climbed up, lay down on the bench and cuddled with him. The animal was on the boat for more than an hour and a half. The video was shot in the middle of May and is now going viral. According to CBS Los Angeles, "animal officials say the encounter was rare and advises the public to avoid sea lions as they are prone to bite." Watch the video and tell us this isn't puppy love.

5. Pilot aborts landing after runway disappears

When we sit in the main cabin of a plane looking out the window at the fog or rain as we are about to land, we just assume the pilot has a much better view than we do. But the pilot of this passenger jet couldn't see much. As he got closer to the landing strip, it practically disappeared in the fog forcing the pilot to quickly pull up at the last second.
