Ohio man ordered to wear ‘idiot’ sign after drunken 911 call

An Ohio man is standing outside this week wearing a sign around his neck that declares he is an idiot.

Richard Dameron, a 58-year-old from Cleveland, stood with his arms crossed outside the local police station in Sky News footage, a yellow sign with block lettering stating his apology.

"I apologize to officer Simone & all police officers for being an idiot calling 911 threatening to kill you. I'm sorry and it will never happen again," the sign says.

Dameron was convicted of calling 911 and threatening police, and then missing a court appearance, according to WKYC. His unusual sentence is public shaming for three hours every day this week.

"I was under the influence of alcohol, very deeply into it," he told Sky News.

"I apologize for everything I've done, you know, I just feel bad about it, because the man's never done nothing to me."

The judge who sentenced Dameron, Pinkey Carr, once made another Cleveland resident wear an idiot sign after she drove onto a sidewalk to pass a school bus.

"Only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus," the sign read.

Associated Press reported Judge Carr said that sometimes she "has to get creative to get through to people."
