Premier’s Nickelback song choice confuses, fails to inspire Alberta voters

Nickleback Prentice

Just because Nickelback is from Alberta doesn’t mean that the much-loved-and-loathed band is an appropriate choice for an election announcement.

On Tuesday morning, Nickelback’s expletive-filled “Burn It To The Ground” — which, thematically, is already an odd choice, even if the Alberta PC government had opted for the cleaner radio edit — blasted over loudspeakers just moments before Premier Jim Prentice called for an early election.

To say it was an odd song selection would be an grand understatement. Have a look at some of the wildly inappropriate lyrics below:

“Well, it’s midnight, damn right, we’re wound up too tight / I’ve got a fist full of whiskey, the bottle just bit me,” the polarizing anthem-rock band sang.

“That sh*t makes me bat-sh*t crazy / We’ve got no fear, no doubt, all in balls out.

“We’re going off tonight / To kick out every light / Take anything we want / Drink everything in sight / We’re going till the world stops turning / While we burn it to the ground tonight.

“We got no class, no taste, no shirt, and sh*t faced / We got it lined up, shot down, firing back straight crown.”

Profanity aside, phrases like “drink everything in sight” and “we got no class” make the song a confusing choice for any political party that wants to instill confidence in its voters. Perhaps the PC party is putting the “party” back in “political party”?

Almost immediately, TV and Internet viewers took to Twitter to express their disgust and bewilderment over the poor “warm up” song selection.

The consensus: The song choice was, well, confusing, and as it turns out, people still really hate Nickelback.

The Alberta election is scheduled for May 5.
