Prince Charles to ride TTC bus plus other fun suggestions for his Toronto trip

We have many ideas for activities the Prince could try if he is looking to be more like a Torontonian

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall will be in Toronto for a couple of days near the end of May as part of their Canadian tour. While here, the prince will get a chance to do something many Torontonians dread doing every morning.

He's going to get on the TTC.

While in Toronto, the royals will see Victoria Day fireworks at Asbridges Bay (from a boat), visit the Pan/Parapan American Games Athletes' Village, go to the Distillery District and he'll visit the Yonge Street Mission.

After the reception at the Distillery District, he and his wife will separate as the Prince visits the Yonge Street Mission to meet with CEOs and youth who have been involved with the drug and sex trades. Charles will then ride the rocket to the UforChange centre on Parliament Street to see youth development workshops.

If you are wondering what route he'll take, there isn't actually a route that goes between the two locations. He'll be riding his own chartered bus and TTC spokesman Brad Ross tells the Toronto Star it will be "spic and span." Details of the trip have not been ironed out, but Ross said the royal TTC rocket likely will not be picking up passengers and the Prince will not have to put in a token.

So he won't have to wait in the rain for the bus to arrive and he won't have to pay for it, but it is a step to being like millions of Torontians. If he wants to fit in even more, we have some suggestions.

  1. Call The Fan 590 to complain about why the Toronto Maple Leafs/Raptors aren't playing well.

  2. Attend a Rob Ford weigh-in. But they will only happen every other week now so the timing may not work out.

  3. Watch fireworks from the beach with thousands of other people, some of whom endanger lives by lighting off their own fireworks right there. The Prince will be watching the same fireworks at Ashbridges Bay, but he'll be on a private boat.

  4. Sit in traffic on the DVP.

  5. Try to ride a bike up University Avenue. If he doesn't have a bike, he can grab a Bixi bike. The Prince definitely knows how to ride a bike and showed off his skills riding an eco bike in a double-breasted suit in July.

  6. Ride a roller coaster at Canada's Wonderland.

  7. Throw out the first pitch at a Toronto Blue Jays game.

  8. If he was in town at another time, he could try a doughnut cheeseburger at the Ex (Exhibition Place).

  9. Maybe he'll even try to take your job. It's right in his wheelhouse after reporting the weather in Scotland last week.

As for the Prince, if he does end up riding the rocket, it won't be the first time he's been on public transit. In February, His Royal Highness drove a London Underground tube train in Derby, England, at the factory where they are built.

The royal couple will be in Toronto May 21-22. It will be Charles' 16th visit to Canada and Camilla's second.
