Protester dumps tonnes of horse manure outside French parliament

A massive clean-up effort is currently underway in front of the national parliament building in Paris, France.

The mess: tonnes of horse dung.

A determined truck-driving protester made the stinky delivery earlier today as a statement against President Francois Hollande and the politics of "France's ruling elite."

"Out with Hollande and the entire political class. Long live the Sixth Republic," read a message on the side of the man's truck.

The unidentified man was detained by police before he could dump the entire truckload of manure at the entrance of Bourbon Palace, Reuters reports.

Police immediately covered up the protest message on the truck with a white banner.

Hollande is the country's least popular president in modern French history. According to opinion polls, his current approval rating is just 26 per cent.

French actress Julie Gayet is currently suing a magazine over reports of an affair with the president, a rumour that has not helped Hollande's public reputation.

Hollande has been publicly booed before — but today's demonstration marks the grossest protest of his presidency yet.
