Rokerthon: Al Roker attempts to break world record for longest live weather report

After sleeping past his alarm for the first time in his 40-year career, legendary weatherman Al Roker found inspiration for a new app. Al and "Al's Weather Rokies" co-creater Katie Linendoll preview the app with Simon Constable on digits. Photo: Rokies.

Today is Guinness World Records Day — and everyone’s favourite weatherman is already in the middle of an exhausting record-breaking attempt.

Al Roker is about 15 hours into his attempt the break the world record for longest live weather report.

The “Wake Up With Al” host began his record-breaking broadcast last night at 10 p.m. He plans to forecast the weather live for 34 hours, until just after 8 a.m. Friday morning.

(The current official record stands at 24 hours, although a Norwegian weather broadcaster recently completed a 33-hour broadcast — that one is not yet official — that Roker wants to be sure to beat.)

A memorable moment so far: Roker forget to turn off his mic on his first bathroom break.

For the record to be verified by Guinness World Records, Roker must adhere to the following rules, according to TODAY.com:

  • He must talk about weather for the entirety of the time, outside of breaks.

  • He can talk about current weather, and weather seven days in the past or seven days ahead.

  • For every 60 minutes completed, he can take a five-minute break. The breaks can carry over and be combined, so if he goes four hours without stopping, he can take a 20-minute break.

  • Two independent witnesses must also be there at all times.

Roker is asking viewers to pledge support through his Crowdrise campaign, which benefits United Service Organizations.
