Russia Today anchor Liz Wahl quits her job on live TV

Earlier this week, Russia Today reporter Abby Martin created a stir when she denounced the Russian government for its actions in Crimea, Ukraine. Just two days later, RT anchor Liz Wahl created a stir of her own, echoing the sentiment as she announced her resignation on live television.

"I'm proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth," said Wahl, a self-proclaimed Filipina-Hungarian-American news anchor. "That is why after this newscast, I'm resigning."

"Personally, I cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government that whitewashes the actions of Putin."

Her public resignation can be seen in the video below.

Russia Today is a Russian-funded station based in Washington, D.C. Part of the reason she is resigning is because of how strongly she disagrees with President Vladimir Putin’s actions in Ukraine, which she believes have been swept under the rug by the network.

Wahl couldn’t take it anymore and she quit on the air.

Clearly going off-script, Wahl looked directly into the camera and said, “I cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government that whitewashes the actions of Putin. I’m proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth, and that is why, after this newscast, I’m resigning.”

Wahl’s father is a military veteran and her husband is a military base physician, so the network’s coverage of a potentially explosive crisis presented her with moral and ethical dilemmas.

Earlier this week on air, she cited comments made by fellow RT presenter, Abby Martin, that Russian intervention in Ukraine’s Crimea region was “wrong”, and called her “my girl” in a tweet shortly afterward.

RT denounced Wahl’s on-air actions as a “self-promotional” media stunt.

“When a journalist disagrees with the editorial position of his or her organization, the usual course of action is to address those grievances with the editor, and, if they cannot be resolved, to quit like a professional. But when someone makes it a big public show of a personal decision, it’s nothing more than a self-promotional stunt,” said RT.

Wahl said that she had been planning on quitting for some time and that it actually made her feel sick that she worked there.

“In order to succeed there, you don’t question,” she said.
